Countdown to Moving Day

Here are some guidelines to help you organize your move.

    8 Weeks before your move

  • Sort out the items you will be moving.
  • Get rid of items you either don't want to move or don't use any more.
  • Chose which discarded items will be donated and which will be sold at garage sales.

    6 Weeks before your move

  • Put on a garage sale.
  • Start creating a floor plan of your new residence to help chose the arangement of the furniture. This will be very helpful to your movers.

    4 Weeks before your move

  • Interview and select movers.  Get recommendations from friends and family. Go to the California Moving and Storage Association web site to get the names of credible movers in your area.
  • Get at least three estimates. And don't assume that the least expensive estimate is the best deal. You generally get what you pay for.
  • Decide if you will pack or the movers will pack.  If you are packing use the mover’s estimate for how many boxes and what kind are needed.  Check your homeowner’s policy for moving coverage.

    2 Weeks before your move

  • Start packing and sorting your belongings.
  • Chose right box for the job.
  • Label on the sides of boxes so the movers know where they go.
  • If you want to know what’s in the box, then put that on top.
  • Fill out postal change of address forms and send them to the utility companies, telephone company, etc.

    1 Week  before your move

  • Set aside toys, dog food, and other important things.
  • Set up cleaning crew for new and old house.
  • Make arrangements for care of animals and children.

    2-3 Days  before your move

  • Write directions for the mover to the new house.
  • Verify the date with the mover.
  • Round up prescriptions, checkbooks and important papers. Make certain you know where they are. Better yet, take them with you in your car on the day of the move.
  • Make sure the access to hallways and the house in general are clear.
  • If you've asked the mover to do your packing they will usually do it the day before move. The mover will label the boxes as to where they are going and not what is in them, unless requested.  Rarely will a moving company put an inventory of contents on the side of the box. You can provide the moving company with that information, if you like.

    Moving Day:

  • Pack bedding.
  • Have directions and floor plan for movers.
  • Load car with personal items.
